I've been contemplating being creative in the sewing field for some time now (make that years!!)
Having a new sewing machine was supposed to be the impetus to drag out all the fabric I have stashed away "for patchwork" over the years.
It took a challenge from my favourite web group to do a Skinny Book to get me started.
The deal is this:
- Sign up for the Skinny Book swap- theme this time is fabric
- Find out how many others signed up (18 this time)
- Make 18 pages 7x4 inches (we are mainly in the States), that's why it's tall and "skinny"
- Send them off by the due date
- Wait impatiently while the swap hostess sorts them into 18 piles
- Wait some more while the mail gets here from USA
- Open parcel with much excitement to see what all the other 17 people have done
- Wish that I didn't get back my least favourite of my own pieces
- Sigh philosophically and enjoy putting them together either into a book, a mini quilt or...?
I'm going to wait to see them before I decide. Meanwhile here is a rundown of my process.
- Paint canvas sheets, backs with lime and purple spots and fronts with a slightly squared design
- cut out all the motifs from a piece of batik look- alike fabric that I happened to have on hand
- Sew the motifs on using my new machine and graduating colours thread.
- Embellish with fun yarns
- Sew/ glue fun bits like sequins and beads to give that touch of glitz to the project
One front with the pieces sewn and yarn embellished.
One front with pieces ready to sew (on Right)
Spotty Backing fabric at the bottom.
I'll post pics of the finished objects when done.
